Type C

The Europlug

"The social butterfly. Fits in about half the sockets on Earth."

If plugs had a social network, Type C would have the most friends. The Europlug is a thin, flat, two-pin plug with no ground, designed in the 1960s specifically to fit nearly every European socket.

Things to know

  • Fits a lot. Type C slides into Type C, E, F, H, J, K, L, N and O sockets, and often into Indian and South African sockets too. That's why it's the most useful single adapter you can own.
  • Low current only. Europlugs are rated for 2.5 A. Phone chargers, laptop chargers and electric toothbrushes: yes. Hair dryers and heaters: those use grounded plugs like E/F anyway.
  • Slightly flexible pins. The pins converge a little toward the tips so they grip a range of socket sizes. Clever.

Plugbert's verdict

If you're going to Europe and only bring one adapter, bring a Type C. The Europlug gets you in almost anywhere.
