Type F
The Schuko
"German engineering. Symmetrical. You can plug it in upside down and it does not care."
Schuko is short for Schutzkontakt, German for "protective contact." Invented in Bavaria in the 1920s, it's now the most widespread grounded plug in Europe.
Where you'll find it
Germany, Austria, the Netherlands, Spain, Portugal, Scandinavia, most of Eastern Europe, Russia, Tรผrkiye, South Korea, Indonesia, and more.
Things to know
- Grounded through clips, not pins. Two metal strips on the top and bottom edges of the plug touch springs inside the recessed socket.
- Reversible. You can plug it in either way up. Plugbert finds this deeply satisfying.
- Recessed socket. The plug sits inside a round well, which stops fingers from touching live pins.
- 16 A rated โ good for kettles, heaters and other European appliances that drink a lot of power.
Plugbert's verdict
German engineering in plug form. If your device has one, it'll also fit most French sockets thanks to the CEE 7/7 hybrid design.
