Type J

The Swiss

"Precise, compact, slightly off-centre on purpose. Neutral, obviously."

Precise, compact, and slightly off-centre on purpose. Type J is used in Switzerland, Liechtenstein and Rwanda.

Things to know

  • Europlugs fit. The Swiss socket accepts Type C, which covers almost all phone and laptop chargers.
  • Schuko plugs don't. A round, chunky German or French plug will not fit into a recessed Swiss socket. This is the number one surprise for European visitors.
  • Triple sockets. Swiss outlets often come in clusters of three, tucked tightly together.

Plugbert's verdict

Neutral, obviously. Bring a Type C for small stuff and a Type J adapter for anything grounded.
