Type D
The Old British
"Retired from Britain in 1947, now thriving in India."
Type D is a retired British plug that found a second career abroad. Britain used it before switching to Type G in 1947, but it lives on in India, Nepal, Sri Lanka, and parts of Africa and the Middle East.
Things to know
- Three round pins in a triangle, with the top ground pin thicker than the other two.
- 5 A rating. Bigger appliances in India often use the chunkier Type M (the 15 A version of the same design).
- Universal sockets everywhere. Many Indian sockets are combo designs that also grip Europlugs (Type C) and sometimes UK and US plugs. Grip quality varies from "firm handshake" to "polite suggestion."
Plugbert's verdict
A grand old plug with excellent posture. Bring a Type D adapter for India, and maybe a Europlug as backup.
