Type B
The American Three-Prong
"Type A who went to the gym and got a ground pin."
Type B is Type A after a protein shake. Same two flat blades, plus a round ground pin below them that's slightly longer, so it connects first when you plug in and disconnects last when you pull out.
Things to know
- Grounded. Desktop computers, power tools, kitchen appliances and anything with a metal case usually come with Type B.
- Fits Type B sockets only. You can't put a Type B plug into a two-slot Type A socket. People who snap off the ground pin to make it fit are, in Plugbert's professional opinion, living dangerously.
- Japan: many Japanese homes and older hotels only have Type A sockets. A cheap 3-to-2 adapter solves it, at the cost of losing the ground.
Plugbert's verdict
The reliable older sibling. Also falls out of the wall sometimes, but at least it's grounded when it does.
