Type G
The British
"The safest plug on Earth and the most painful thing to step on barefoot."
Type G is the safest plug in the world and the worst thing to step on in the dark. Both facts are equally important.
Where you'll find it
The UK, Ireland, Malta, Cyprus, Hong Kong, Singapore, Malaysia, the Gulf states (UAE, Saudi Arabia, Qatar, Bahrain), Kenya, Uganda, and many former British territories.
Things to know
- There's a fuse in the plug. Every Type G plug contains a small cartridge fuse (usually 3 A, 5 A or 13 A). If the appliance faults, the fuse blows, not the house.
- The ground pin is longer and opens shutters that cover the live and neutral holes. No ground pin, no access โ which is why a Europlug won't go in on its own.
- Insulated sleeves. The live and neutral pins are half-sleeved so you can't touch metal while the plug is partly in.
- Switches on sockets. Most British sockets have their own on/off switch. If your phone isn't charging in London, check the switch. Plugbert has seen grown adults cry over this.
Plugbert's verdict
Over-engineered in the best way. Bring a Type G adapter, and wear slippers.
